In his statement, Xhaka explained his reasoning at the time: "In this troubled state of mind I acquired a vaccine certificate, instead of clarifying my unanswered questions in the proper way."1 He added that he now recognizes his error, stating: "Today I see clearly, that this way was not correct. It was a mistake. I'm sorry."1 Xhaka has indicated he will cooperate fully with the authorities conducting the investigation.1
As a result of the inquiry, Xhaka has withdrawn from Switzerland's UEFA Nations League fixtures scheduled for September, which include matches against North Macedonia on September 26 and Scotland on September 29, as well as further fixtures against Slovenia and North Macedonia in early October.1
