Traditional anchors have long scarred seagrass beds in England's Studland Bay, but a shift toward ecological moorings is reversing the damage at an impressive pace. The innovative system replaces conventional anchor chains with elastic risers that move with tidal flows, preventing the seafloor from being churned and eroded.1
Researchers have documented striking recovery in areas equipped with these new moorings. Ten experimental ecological moorings installed in 2021 saw an average 94% reduction in exposed seagrass between 2021 and 2025, while a second study area that retained traditional chain moorings until 2023 showed a 65% decrease in scarring.1 Kira Dunn, a researcher involved in the work, emphasized the significance of these findings: "The results clearly show that when physical disturbance is removed, seagrass recovers within the area. It is incredibly encouraging to see this important habitat recovering at such a rapid rate."1
The ecological moorings function through a two-meter spiral screw anchored to the seafloor, connected to a two-meter elastic riser that flexes with changing tides.1 Studland Bay has been designated a marine protected area since 2019 and contains one of the United Kingdom's largest seagrass meadows.1 These findings provide scientific evidence that could guide seagrass conservation and restoration efforts across other busy waterways in Britain.
