Pakistan conducted airstrikes on Afghanistan's northeastern Kunar and Paktika provinces on September 21, targeting what it described as militant hideouts.1 The Taliban-controlled Afghan government reported that three people were killed and a residential house in the Nurgal area of Kunar Province was completely destroyed at 3:00 a.m., with four family members injured.1 Pakistani security officials, however, claimed that 28 suspected militants were killed in the strikes.1
The airstrikes came as a retaliatory response to a suicide bombing attack that struck Pakistan's police headquarters in Kohat the previous Friday, which killed at least 31 people, including 16 police officers, and was followed by a 20-hour gunfight.1 The Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen Pakistan claimed responsibility for that attack, an organization with ties to the Pakistani Taliban (TTP).1 Pakistan's last fatal airstrikes on Afghan territory occurred in June.1 Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have remained high since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, with the two countries experiencing their most serious military clashes in February.1
