Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong has announced her country's intention to reform the United Nations Security Council's veto system if Australia secures a seat on the body.1 Speaking during the UN General Assembly, Wong pointed to Russia's use of the veto to block a resolution condemning its illegal annexation of four Ukrainian territories—a measure that received support from ten of the fifteen Security Council members—as evidence of the need for change.1
The veto power currently rests exclusively with the Security Council's five permanent members: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, each of whom can block any resolution or decision.1 Wong emphasized that Australia is committed to upholding international law and supporting the multilateral rules-based framework.1 Australia has not held a Security Council seat since 2014, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is actively pursuing one for the country.1
Wong also noted that Australia has announced targeted sanctions against Israeli settlements in the West Bank, but will not join the comprehensive sanctions adopted by European nations.1
