Seven opposition armed groups in Ethiopia have announced the formation of a new coalition called the Alliance for Survival, with the stated objective of overthrowing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government.1 The alliance comprises the Fano militia from the Amhara region, the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), and four smaller organizations.1 These groups collectively control six of Ethiopia's twelve regions—Oromia, Amhara, Tigray, Ogaden, Afar, and Benishangul-Gumuz.1
The rebel groups accuse the government of precipitating war, genocide, widespread destruction, and severe poverty, warning that Ethiopia faces the risk of disintegration.1 The Tigray conflict, which lasted two years before ending through a 2022 African Union peace agreement, resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths and displaced millions of people.1 In July, Prime Minister Abiy responded to such opposition by expressing confidence in Ethiopia's defensive capabilities, stating that "even if others join forces, we have no concern whatsoever about Ethiopian sovereignty."1
The timing of the alliance announcement follows June elections in which Abiy's Prosperity Party secured an overwhelming parliamentary majority.1 However, the Tigray region and its six million inhabitants were completely excluded from the electoral process.1
