A teacher convicted of sexually abusing students in Indonesia has been secretly freed from prison before completing his sentence, according to a BBC investigation.12 Mohammad Subhi Azhar Sani, known as Bechi, was arrested in 2022 and sentenced to seven years imprisonment, but was released in August 2025 after serving less than half his term.2 The man is the son of an influential Islamic religious leader.2
The Indonesia Ministry of Immigration and Corrections stated the early release was granted based on sentence reductions provided under applicable legislation.12 Bechi was originally scheduled to become eligible for parole in March 2027 or to be released upon sentence expiration in 2029.2 BBC undercover video footage documented his appearance at public events in January and March 2025 while ostensibly still imprisoned.2
At least ten female students have accused Bechi of sexual assault or rape, according to investigators who interviewed them.2 One victim, Ira Puspitasari, reported being raped and sexually abused by Bechi for over four years beginning when she was 15 years old; she attempted to flee but was tracked down by security personnel.2 Although Bechi was convicted of sexual abuse charges, the court ruled that rape charges against him were not proven.2 Prosecutors had sought a maximum sentence of 16 years before the seven-year term was imposed.2
Convicted victims and other witnesses were not notified of Bechi's early release, raising serious concerns among victims and human rights organizations about the integrity of judicial procedures and victim protection mechanisms.2
