Regulators across China have recently identified a surge in investment fraud schemes that utilize counterfeit securities firms and fake trading applications.1 Victims in Guangxi and Guangdong have suffered substantial losses through these deceptive platforms. One investor in Guangdong lost 2 million yuan across 17 transactions on a fraudulent app, of which only 4,950 yuan from the initial 600,000 yuan deposit was successfully withdrawn.1 Another investor in Guangxi was defrauded of 48,000 yuan and nearly lost an additional 500,000 yuan before being stopped by bank personnel and police.1
The fraud schemes employ sophisticated deception tactics to manipulate victims. Scammers manipulate the backend systems of fake apps to alter displayed data, including market information, trading buttons, and account profit figures.1 Additionally, fraudsters steal photos, names, and employee identification numbers from legitimate securities professionals to forge credentials, and some even use artificial intelligence to create deepfake videos for impersonation purposes.1 Funds obtained through these schemes are routed into personal bank accounts rather than legitimate securities custodian accounts, a key indicator of fraudulent activity.1
The scale of these operations underscores their prevalence. Guangfa Securities has received over 500 related reports of such fraud in the current year alone.1 According to police officer Huang Guangzhao, most individuals arrested are lower-level operatives managing offline transactions, while the primary perpetrators behind these schemes typically operate from abroad.1
