Australia is exploring the possibility of strengthening its relationship with the European Union, following Canadian Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland's recent push for associate membership status with the bloc 1. Australian Trade Minister Don Farrell has indicated openness to various options for deepening ties, while EU officials have expressed their interest in closer engagement with Australia 1.
The EU represents the world's second-largest economy, with a total economic scale of $23 trillion USD (approximately $32.3 trillion AUD) 1. An Australia-EU free trade agreement was reached in March but has not yet been ratified by either party 1. Once approved, the agreement would provide Australian agriculture and services sectors with preferential market access. Farrell has stated that "the world is dividing into protectionists and free traders. Australia's undeniable prosperity over the past 50 years has come from our engagement with the world" 1.
However, the agreement faces domestic political opposition. Opposition leader Matt Kanaivan has called the deal "the worst agreement in history" and suggested the possibility of blocking it in the Senate 1. The trade environment has grown increasingly challenging, with the United States implementing "Liberation Day" tariffs in 2025, while China unilaterally imposed tariffs on Australian commodities including wine, barley, and timber in 2023 1. Among Australian exporters, over 6,600 send goods to the United Kingdom—double the number exporting to Germany and more than triple those exporting to France 1.
