China's national residents spend an average of 5 hours and 37 minutes online daily in 2024, more than double the figure from 2018, according to data from China's National Bureau of Statistics1. Among adults aged 18 to 59, daily internet usage reaches 7 hours and 13 minutes, representing a 4.5-hour increase from 2018 and second only to sleeping time1.
The surge in screen time is particularly pronounced among older adults. Research from Shenzhen University found that nearly 9 out of 10 elderly respondents among 201 surveyed watch short videos almost daily, with nearly half exceeding two hours per day1. QuestMobile data indicates that China's mobile internet user base aged 50 and above reaches 3.51 billion, spending more than 4 hours daily scrolling on their phones1. One 62-year-old user, Wu Zheng, spends an average of 8 hours and 27 minutes daily on his phone, with short drama apps being his most frequently opened application1.
Experts warn that this consumption pattern reflects deliberate design strategies. Hu Yong, a professor at the School of Journalism and Communication at Peking University, stated: "What platforms and content producers are competing for together is viewers' time, emotions, and psychological energy. This competition is often built on precise exploitation of human psychological vulnerabilities: curiosity, gratification, anger, and emotional resonance have become the primary materials favored by algorithms"1.
