Chess Atlas is a visual archive documenting the evolution of chess design from the 7th century to contemporary times.1 The collection traces its origins to chess pieces from Afrasiab dating to around 700 CE and extends through works by modern artists and architects.1 The archive is organized by material categories, including ivory and bone pieces from approximately 700 to 1900 CE, wooden sets spanning from 1616 to 2000, ceramics and porcelain from the 12th century through the 1900s, metal pieces from 1920 onward, crystal glass from 1944 to 2014, and mixed media and conceptual art from 1943 to the present.1
The collection features designs from notable artistic periods and creators, including the Selenus pattern from 1616 and the Staunton Standard set from 1849.1 More recent contributions come from prominent architects and artists such as Marcel Duchamp in 1943, Salvador Dalí from 1964 to 1968, Yoko Ono in 1966, Frank Gehry in 2012, and Zaha Hadid in 2014.1 These works demonstrate how chess set design has intersected with broader artistic movements, including modernism and the Bauhaus movement.1
