Britain's Labour government has brought Chiltern Railways into public ownership, marking the sixth train operator to be nationalised under the current administration.1 The government has committed to completing the nationalisation of all remaining major passenger rail services by the end of 2027.1

As part of the transition, the government has pledged to increase service frequency and capacity on the Chiltern network starting in December, adding 25 daily services and an additional 10,000 seats per working day.1 Rail Minister Peter Hendy stated that "public ownership will further strengthen progress through closer collaboration across the entire industry."1 The next operator set to move into public ownership is Great Western Railway, with the transfer expected to occur in December.1

The nationalisation has sparked tension with the RMT union, which opposes plans for driver-only operation on the network.1 The union is conducting a strike ballot among its members and has planned a demonstration at London's Mary Lebone station.1
