Researchers at the University of California, Riverside have identified a chemical compound called bistrifluron that blocks western dry wood termites from forming new exoskeletons, killing over 95% of laboratory termite colonies.1 The substance exploits a critical biological vulnerability by converting the termite molting process—an essential stage of their natural life cycle—into a lethal weakness.1 Unlike traditional fumigation methods, bistrifluron offers a more environmentally sustainable approach with no harm to humans.1
The chemical functions as a chitin synthesis inhibitor, preventing insects from producing sufficient chitin for their new exoskeletons.1 In controlled experiments, bistrifluron achieved a 95.7% mortality rate with selective exposure and 99% under continuous exposure to the chemical.1 When only 5% of termites initially contacted bistrifluron, the entire colony reached 100% mortality by day 90.1 A 0.1% concentration of bistrifluron treatment produced approximately 99% mortality after 60 days.1 Researchers further enhanced effectiveness by combining the pesticide with pinene, increasing mortality rates from 70% to over 95%.1 The findings were published in 2025 in the Journal of Economic Entomology, with a patent application submitted by UC Riverside in April 2025 and made public in October of that year.1
