Twenty-five years after their arrest, a group of Eritrean political prisoners remains detained without trial, their fates unknown to their families scattered abroad. In May 2001, 15 senior political figures, collectively known as the G-15, signed an open letter demanding the implementation of a national constitution and the holding of elections. 1 On September 18, 2001, Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki ordered the arrest of 11 senior officials from this group. 1 The detainees, including former Defence Minister, Foreign Minister, and later Fisheries Minister Petros Solomon, have been held incommunicado in facilities such as Ela-Ero and Karshelli prisons, with no access to legal representation or family contact. 1
The crackdown has devastated families of the imprisoned. The wife of one detainee, Aster Johannes, disappeared at Asmara International Airport on December 11, 2003, compounding the anguish of relatives now living in exile. 1 Adult children of the prisoners have spoken to international media from abroad, expressing desperation over not knowing whether their parents are even alive. 1 The detention has been condemned by the United Nations and human rights organizations, which classify the G-15 members as prisoners of conscience and have repeatedly called for their release. 1 Meanwhile, President Isaias, now 80 years old, has never implemented the 1997-approved constitution or conducted any national elections. 1
