President Trump has prohibited CNN, MSNBC (MS NOW), and Politico from accessing the White House, with reporters from these organizations denied entry and their credentials revoked within hours of the announcement.14 Trump announced the ban on Truth Social, stating it would take effect immediately, citing years of accumulated reporting he characterized as "fake news."1 On Saturday morning, journalists from the affected outlets attempted to enter the White House but were blocked by the Secret Service, with press credentials either failing to scan or being confiscated.4 An MS NOW reporter and cameraman had their credentials confiscated at the West Wing security entrance,1 while CNN reporter Betsy Klein's credentials were deactivated4 and Politico reporter Cheyenne Haslett was denied access with her credentials revoked.4

The action has drawn sharp criticism from press freedom advocates and Democratic officials. The White House Correspondents' Association stated that "the Constitution protects press freedom regardless of whether the president likes a news organization's coverage,"1 while the Committee to Protect Journalists chair Bruce Brown called the ban "fundamentally unconstitutional" and predicted it would be quickly overturned by courts.4 CNN responded that "the First Amendment explicitly provides for our right to report without government obstruction and interference,"4 and an MS NOW spokesperson asserted that the White House "belongs to the American people" and pledged to "take necessary steps" to protect First Amendment rights.4 The free speech organization PEN America stated that "someone needs to explain to President Trump how the First Amendment works."1 Trump suggested the ban could expand to other outlets, referencing the New York Times and Washington Post as sources of "fake news,"4 and indicated additional media organizations might be added to the prohibition.1
