Beijing will test air defense sirens in areas outside the Fifth Ring Road, while Shanghai will hold both a siren test and a civil defense drill.1 To assist residents in distinguishing between different alert types, authorities have outlined three categories of air defense warnings with distinct acoustic patterns.
The preliminary warning alert consists of a 36-second tone followed by a 24-second silence, repeated three times over a three-minute cycle, characterized by long intervals between sounds.1 The air raid alert employs a different pattern: a 6-second tone alternating with 6-second silence, repeated 15 times within a three-minute period, creating short intervals.1 The all-clear signal is a continuous three-minute tone with no interruption.1
For citizens not participating in the civil defense drill, no special action is required; residents are advised to maintain their normal work and daily routines.1
