Harrods has filed a claim against the estate of deceased billionaire Mohamed Al Fayed seeking full indemnification for compensation payments made to women who have alleged sexual abuse at the hands of the former owner.1 The department store has set aside £57 million for settlements and has already paid out £4.1 million while reaching agreements with 113 women.1 Despite publicly stating its acceptance of responsibility for the abuse suffered by survivors, Harrods' legal representatives have confirmed the retailer intends to pursue complete reimbursement from Al Fayed's estate for any compensation it is required to pay.1
Lucy Traynor, a lawyer representing survivors, criticized this apparent contradiction. According to Traynor: "Harrods publicly says that it accepts responsibility for the abuse suffered by survivors. However, its lawyers have confirmed that Harrods intends to seek a full indemnity from Mohamed Al Fayed's estate for any compensation it is required to pay."1 Legal representatives of approximately 275 survivors, coordinated through KP Law, are pursuing compensation claims that could potentially reach £150 million.1
Al Fayed, who died in 2023 at age 94, faced allegations of rape, sexual assault, sexual exploitation, and human trafficking spanning from 1977 to 2014.1 According to The Sunday Times, his wealth was estimated at £1.69 billion in 2023.1 The High Court hearing on the matter is scheduled for November.1
