The Federal Bureau of Investigation announced that at least 35 additional women have filed fraud complaints against Daejon Love, 35, expanding what was already a significant case involving more than 20 previously identified victims 1. Love and his accomplice Taylor Chan, 18, were arrested in August and charged with wire fraud after allegedly impersonating San Francisco 49ers players and investment advisors to deceive victims into making fraudulent investments 1. The scheme netted the pair approximately $1.3 million through deception conducted via dating applications, false identities, and fabricated video calls 1.
The fraudulent operation targeted women across California, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon between February 2022 and the time of the arrests in August 1. According to FBI Special Agent Douglas Olson, victims were "encouraged to apply for personal loans and make life-altering financial decisions based on the belief that they were building a future with someone they cared about" 1. Once the money was transferred, Olson noted that "victims were cut off, without answers, without their funds, and typically without closure" 1. Love employed AI-assisted fake identities, forged investment accounts, and counterfeit video calls to perpetrate the scheme 1.
