Ryanair Chief Executive Michael O'Leary has issued an apology for using the phrase "high-fare rapists" to describe rival airlines, following pressure from a Dublin-based sexual violence support organization 1. O'Leary had stated that some people were "desperate to fly Ryanair's cheap fares because they can't afford Europe's other high-fare rapists" 1. The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre's chief executive, Rachel Morrogh, sent a letter demanding an apology after the centre received calls from sexual assault survivors and victims expressing distress and pain over the remarks 1.
Initially, O'Leary declined to apologize, arguing that his comments did not diminish the severity of rape as "a terrible crime" and that he therefore "would not apologize" 1. However, after consulting with family and friends, he released a video on Friday in which he expressed sincere and unreserved regret, stating he apologized "to these people, particularly to survivors" 1. This is not O'Leary's first use of such language; in 2004, he referred to the operator of Stansted Airport as "a bunch of overpaid rapists" during a dispute over airport fees 1.
