NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is now expected to operate for at least 22 years, more than double its originally planned 10-year mission duration.1 This dramatic extension in operational life stems from a combination of factors: the telescope's first orbital maneuver consumed less than 10 percent of its budgeted fuel, the spacecraft carries additional fuel beyond its maximum planned mass allocation, and further fuel savings are anticipated during subsequent orbital insertions.1
The Roman telescope will reach its destination at the Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 2 (L2) approximately 100 days after launch, around early December 2026.1 The initial orbital adjustment, scheduled for August 31, 2026, is projected to save approximately four years of operational life compared to fuel consumption estimates.1 The spacecraft's actual launch mass of 17,760 pounds (8,056 kilograms) falls significantly below its budgeted maximum of 21,605 pounds (9,800 kilograms), a difference that translates into additional fuel reserves supporting roughly four more years of science operations.1 The second orbital maneuver and L2 insertion are similarly expected to conserve fuel, collectively providing an estimated four additional years of mission life beyond the primary science phase.1 Once positioned at L2, the telescope will require station-keeping maneuvers approximately every 28 days to maintain its orbital position.1
