Researchers have identified and formally named a previously unknown snake species discovered in New Guinea after rock legend Slash, the guitarist of Guns N' Roses.1 The species, designated Lielaphis slashi, is a reddish-brown, non-venomous snake measuring approximately 28 inches in length that was collected during nighttime fieldwork in 2006.1 The discovery was confirmed through genetic testing and physical characteristics that distinguished it from all previously recognized species.1
