India's Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) has intensified inspections of the country's food and beverage sector, uncovering significant contamination and safety issues across establishments. In recent months, the authority conducted surprise inspections at high-end hotels in New Delhi's Aerocity area, including the JW Marriott and Andaz properties, where inspectors documented serious hygiene deficiencies 1. The Andaz hotel was found to have improper separation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian foods, pest activity, poor sanitation conditions, inadequate hygiene practices among food handlers, and improper storage methods 1. At the JW Marriott, inspectors identified insufficient cleaning of utensils and food-contact surfaces, visible particulate matter in drinking water, and inadequate pest control measures 1.
Since July, the FSSAI has issued notices to over 150 food and beverage companies primarily for false advertising, unsubstantiated health claims, and labeling violations 1. Testing data for the 2025-26 fiscal year reveals widespread compliance failures: of 223,808 food samples tested, 40,023—approximately 17.9 percent—failed to meet safety or labeling standards 1. In both 2023-24 and 2024-25, roughly one-fifth of approximately 170,000 samples tested each year were found to be substandard 1.
