Researchers at the University of Chicago have found that while GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic effectively improve blood sugar control, reduce cardiovascular risk, and promote weight loss, their benefits appear to extend little beyond physical health outcomes.1 The study, which analyzed more than a decade of nationally representative data spanning 2012 to 2023, tracked adults with diabetes and examined changes in depression symptoms, psychological stress, self-rated health, employment status, and marital status.1
The research team, led by Robert Kaestner and Cuiping Schiman from the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy, found that when tracking the same individuals over time, differences in psychological health, self-rated health, employment, and marital status between GLP-1 users and non-users essentially disappeared.1 The findings held regardless of whether researchers observed outcomes after approximately one year or two years of medication use, suggesting that the drugs' influence on broader life outcomes remains minimal.1 The results indicate that despite the substantial physical health improvements these medications deliver, their impact on overall quality of life may be more subtle than their dramatic body-changing effects suggest.1
