Malaysia's King Sultan Ibrahim has granted a conditional pardon to former Prime Minister Najib Razak, permitting him to serve his remaining sentence under house arrest rather than in prison.1 The 73-year-old is required to pay 50 million Malaysian ringgit, approximately 12.3 million US dollars, as a condition of the pardon, which allows him to serve his term at home until August 23, 2028.1
Najib was originally sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2020 on charges of abuse of power, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering related to the 1MDB scandal, which involved approximately 10.3 million US dollars flowing into his personal bank account.1 The 1MDB affair, a state development fund that investigators allege was used to embezzle and launder at least 4.5 billion US dollars in public funds through executives and associates connected to Najib, contributed to his coalition's electoral defeat in 2018.1 In December 2025, Najib received an additional 15-year sentence and a 2.8 billion US dollar fine in a separate case involving charges of abuse of power and money laundering.1 A previous reigning monarch had already halved his initial 12-year sentence and reduced his financial penalties in 2024.1
