China's coast guard and the Philippine coast guard accused each other of deliberately ramming vessels during an incident in the South China Sea near Sabina Shoal on September 18, 2024.1 The confrontation involved China's Coast Guard vessel Sanzhou Ao and Philippine ships BRP Datu Salamat and vessel 3015, which were located approximately 54 nautical miles off the coast of Palawan.1
According to China's coast guard spokesperson Jiang Lue, the Philippine vessel 3015 disregarded multiple warnings from China and deliberately altered course, accelerating to strike the bow of the Chinese coast guard vessel.1 The Philippine Coast Guard, however, stated that a Chinese coast guard ship rammed one of its vessels engaged in a supply mission, causing damage to the vessel's railings and deck.1 The Philippine operation was aimed at delivering fuel to Filipino fishermen, and no personnel injuries were reported in the collision.1 Both sides claimed the other violated international law, with China's coast guard vowing to continue enforcement and maritime rights protection operations.1
