Following a small aircraft collision with China Zun (CITIC Tower) in Beijing in June, Chinese authorities have implemented a sweeping airspace restriction covering a vast region centered on the capital.1 The newly designated special restricted zone encompasses an area exceeding 280,000 square kilometers—roughly equivalent to the size of Italy—and extends across Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, and portions of Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Shandong, Liaoning, and the Bohai Sea.1 The permanent restricted airspace, which spans approximately 600 kilometers in diameter, will take effect on September 20.1
The restricted zone affects a population of approximately 100 million people and encompasses dozens of airports and smaller airfields throughout the region.1 Only designated aircraft are permitted to operate within the airspace, including commercial airlines, approved government flights, and vehicles operated by the military, customs authorities, police, and fire rescue services.1 All authorized flights must be equipped with electronic surveillance and identification systems, and pilots are required to report their safety status prior to operations.1
