At least 48 people have died in Nigeria's Ondo State after consuming locally-produced alcohol suspected to contain methanol, with approximately 100 others receiving medical treatment.1 A total of 182 people have been affected by the poisoning incident, which occurred in the Odigbo and Irele regions.1
The contaminated beverage, known as "Monkey Tail," is an herbal alcoholic drink that authorities believe was adulterated with methanol.1 According to Ondo State Health Commissioner Babasoji Ajakaiye, the toxic effects are severe: "Once they drink it, depending on the quantity, the kidneys fail, the eyes go blind, the brain is damaged."1 One 32-year-old patient, Sola Adebayo, described her experience, stating: "I drank two cups and lost consciousness on Friday. By Saturday I discovered I could not see."1 The first reported death occurred approximately two weeks before the current reporting.1
Fifteen people have been arrested in connection with the incident, including one individual suspected of producing the methanol substance.1 In response, Nigeria's National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has implemented a nationwide ban on the sale of alcohol in small plastic sachets.1
