A UN independent international fact-finding mission has concluded that two US airstrikes in Iran may constitute war crimes, according to a report released on Thursday, September 18.1 The investigation, led by Bangladesh judge Sara Hossain, examined strikes that occurred on February 28 targeting the towns of Minaab and Lamerd.1
The Minaab primary school attack killed more than 150 people, approximately 120 of whom were students, while a separate strike on a sports center in Lamerd resulted in 22 civilian casualties.1 The fact-finding mission also leveled accusations against the Iranian government, documenting alleged crimes against humanity committed through the arrests of opposition members, which Tehran claims resulted in 3,038 deaths and 25,000 injuries.1 The US Central Command stated in March that American forces did not conduct airstrikes on the Lamerd sports center that day.1
Washington has rejected the findings. White House spokesperson Anna Kelly countered that "the only party committing war crimes in this conflict is the Iranian regime,"1 while the Pentagon declined to comment on the report.1 The mission is expected to present its full findings to the UN Human Rights Council on Monday.1
