Britain's Green Party faces internal divisions over a proposed policy that would equate Zionism with racism, with party leadership reluctant to take a clear public position on the controversial measure.1 The motion, which ranked first among policy proposals submitted to the party conference, is almost certain to be discussed at the Green Party's national convention in Brighton in early October.1
If adopted, the policy would treat Zionism as equivalent to other forms of racism, potentially exposing party members who support Zionism to disciplinary action on discrimination grounds.1 The proposal calls for establishing "a single, democratic Palestinian state encompassing the whole of historic Palestine, with Jerusalem as its capital, where all people enjoy equal rights, with Palestinian refugees and their descendants granted the right of return."1 Zack Polanski, the party's England and Wales leader, is understood to harbour reservations about the motion but fears that openly opposing it could alienate left-wing members who support the measure.1 Two amendments have already been submitted to soften the language of the original proposal.1
