Griffin, who was born in 1942 and moved from Ireland to London at age nine, had argued that his ties to Ireland should entitle him to non-resident status for tax purposes.1 However, the tribunal determined that by April 5, 2013, Griffin "had settled in England in every meaningful sense," effectively rejecting his assertion that his emotional connections to Ireland should alter his tax status.1 The court noted that during 2015, Griffin spent only eight nights in Ireland, further undermining his claim.1
Addison Lee, which Griffin founded in 1975, was sold to the Carlyle Group in 2013 for an estimated £300 million.1 Griffin did not personally testify at the tribunal proceedings, with the court noting his "cognitive decline."1 He was honored with a knighthood in 2024.1
