Canadian Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland welcomed the EU's overture, stating that "Europe and Canada are each strong, Europe and Canada together are stronger" during remarks to the European Parliament 1. Canada has expressed interest in expanding collaboration with the EU across critical areas including critical minerals, defense industrial capabilities, artificial intelligence, computing, energy security, space, and payment systems 1. However, the initiative has drawn sharp criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened severe trade consequences if the arrangement proceeds. Trump warned that "if they do that, if I think that's any hostile act, I will put very big tariffs on Europe or stop a lot of trade with Europe" 1.
