Authorities in Odisha state in eastern India discovered five juvenile orangutans in a forest in the Balasore region last week, raising alarm over the nation's role as a transit hub for illegal wildlife trafficking.1 The orangutans belong to a species native only to Indonesia's Sumatra and Borneo islands, prompting Indonesia's forestry ministry to request that India investigate their origin and consider their return.1
Odisha's forest and environment minister Ganesh Ram Singh Kutia expressed suspicion that "they may have been released in the Balasore forest area by an international wildlife smuggling gang."1 The discovery underscores a troubling pattern: India has recorded a sharp increase in seizures of smuggled animals in recent years, reflecting the expanding scale of transnational trafficking networks.1 Between January 2022 and May 2025, authorities seized 7,272 smuggled animals moving between Thailand and India, with over 80 percent intercepted on the Indian side.1
Recent seizures illustrate the scope of operations. In November 2024, Bangalore authorities confiscated 40 rare animals from a shipment originating in Kuala Lumpur, comprising Aldabra giant tortoises, gibbons, caimans, and iguanas.1 In June 2025, Mumbai intercepted 284 exotic animals from a Bangkok shipment that included snakes and turtles.1 In July 2025, Pune authorities stopped 20 exotic animals from a traveler arriving from Bangkok, including 14 green tree pythons, four burrowing parrots, and two Sumatran striped rabbits.1 Smuggling activities have intensified dramatically since 2020.1
