In June alone, more than 7.5 million barrels of oil passed daily through the strait, a substantial increase from approximately 4 million barrels per day before the Iran conflict 1. Saudi Arabia typically exports around 4 million barrels of oil daily through the Red Sea port of Yanbu 1.
Saudi Arabia's military spokesman, Major General Turki al-Malki, responded to the threats, stating that "all Houthi threats to transit vessels will be handled swiftly and decisively, and these threats represent a flagrant violation of international law and constitute maritime piracy" 1. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed concern, saying "I hope they stop. They really shouldn't be doing this" 1.
The Houthi group attacked more than 100 vessels during the Gaza conflict before halting operations following U.S. and Israeli airstrikes in early 2025 1.
