Beijing's anti-fraud center recently issued an alert regarding a fraudulent scheme involving overseas checks that appear to deposit funds into victims' accounts only to vanish days later. 1
The scam targeted Wang, a businessman who needed Hong Kong dollars for his company. 1 In mid-August, Wang found an online post offering to exchange Hong Kong dollars for Chinese yuan and proceeded with the fraudster through six separate transactions, each involving 200,000 yuan transferred from Wang's account. 1 According to Wang's account of the arrangement, the scammer would first deposit Hong Kong dollars into his account, after which Wang would transfer the corresponding amount in yuan to the fraudster's account. 1
Approximately ten days later, when Wang attempted to access his company account funds, he discovered the balance was insufficient. 1 Upon contacting his bank, customer service informed him that while the deposits had indeed appeared in his account at the time, they had been made via checks that the perpetrator subsequently withdrew in full. 1 Across the six transactions, Wang lost a total of 1.2 million yuan. 1
