Researchers have identified a previously unknown frog species in the western Amazon, designated Adenomera varcena 1. The discovery was made in the seasonally flooded forests near the upper Huruaia River region, close to Cruzeiro do Sul and adjacent to the Moa and Croa rivers 1. Scientists distinguished the new species through DNA analysis, its distinctive slow-paced vocalization, and morphological characteristics, including the absence of black spots on the underside of its forearms 1.
The finding was formally published in Ichthyology & Herpetology and represents a significant addition to the Amazon's documented biodiversity 1. Leading the research were Célio F. B. Haddad, a professor at São Paulo State University, and Thiago R. Carvalho, a professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais 1. Notably, Adenomera varcena inhabits seasonally flooded forests, an unusual habitat for a genus typically associated with arid woodlands 1. According to Carvalho, "since we still do not have a detailed understanding of the species' ecological requirements and natural history, it is difficult to predict the impacts of climate change" 1. Haddad underscored the urgency of taxonomic work, stating that "at present, the rate of ecosystem destruction exceeds the pace of taxonomic research" 1.
