A coroner in the United Kingdom has concluded that an infant discovered beneath the floorboards of a 19th-century house was unlawfully killed by strangulation.1 The remains, found on July 29, 2024, in the second floor of a property in the town center of Bishop Auckland, County Durham, were wrapped in newspaper dated June 1910.1 The child, termed "Baby Auckland," was determined to be a full-term infant between 38 and 40 weeks of age.1
Following a two-year investigation that included DNA analysis and forensic examination, coroner Crispin Oliver determined the cause of death was asphyxiation by ligature around the neck, with the twine wound three times before being knotted and wrapped again.1 However, despite the thorough inquiry by senior investigating officer Mel Sutherland and contributions from forensic anthropologist Mikel Zupello and forensic pathologist Louise Mulcahy, the identity of the person responsible could not be established.1 Radiocarbon dating placed the death sometime between the 17th century and 1955, with the newspaper wrapping the remains dated to June 1910.1 The infant was laid to rest in Bishop Auckland Cemetery in April 2024.1 Oliver described the case as "an unfortunate and rare occurrence."1
