Marie Rohlschuh's initiative "Denk Mal Am Ort" invites descendants to return to ancestral homes and confront a painful chapter of European history.1 Since its founding in 2016, the memorial project has organized ninety commemorative events across eight cities,1 providing a space for families to reconnect with their past through physical return to the places their relatives once inhabited.
The Nazi regime systematically dismantled Jewish life in Germany through housing restrictions. Beginning in September 1938, the Nazi newspaper Völkischer Beobachter announced that landlords could terminate Jewish tenants' leases at will,1 followed by forced evictions when legislation took effect on April 30, 1939.1 As autumn 1941 approached, authorities began deporting Jews from their homes to ghettos and concentration camps in Eastern Europe.1
The initiative gives personal dimension to this institutional violence. In 2018, ninety-two-year-old Joel Ludwig Katzenelenbogen was invited to revisit his former residence,1 while nineteen-year-old Adam Klein discovered archival evidence of his family's persecution: a June 12, 1933 letter from a Hanover court that removed his great-grandfather, lawyer Max Has, from the legal profession.1 In Stuttgart, the Metzbacher brothers sold their house for 75,000 Reichsmarks in 1936, of which 70,000 went toward wealth and immigration taxes.1 These stories, preserved in houses and documents, transform abstract historical tragedy into documented family experience.
