The European Union has unveiled a legislative framework designed to regulate children's access to social media platforms through the proposed EU Kids Act.1 Under the plan, children under 13 years old will be prohibited from accessing social media entirely, while teenagers aged 13 to 15 will be limited to one hour of daily access through parental accounts.1 Only children aged 15 and above will be permitted to establish their own social media accounts.1
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen framed the initiative as essential to safeguarding children's online safety and restoring parental authority, stating the law would "put parents back in the driving seat."1 The legislation also requires social media companies to demonstrate that their platform designs meet safety standards.1 The policy was formally announced on Thursday, following its initial mention during von der Leyen's annual address to the European Parliament on Wednesday.1 Several EU member states, including France and Spain, have already independently introduced comparable restrictions.1
