The first major British exhibition dedicated to the illustrations of Finnish artist Tove Jansson will open this November at the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration in Clerkenwell, London.1 The exhibition, titled "Tove Jansson and her Families," will run from November 21 through May 9 and feature over 100 works, including previously unpublished sketches, original illustrations, and personal correspondence that have never been shown to the public before.1
Among the unreleased materials on display are early cover drafts for "Moomins' Father at Sea," part of the beloved children's series that has sold 30 million copies worldwide and been translated into more than 60 languages.1 The collection will provide insight into Jansson's artistic process and creative legacy, which endures more than 25 years after her death.1 In addition to the exhibition, Harper Collins will publish this month a newly available edition of "The Hobbit," featuring Jansson's original illustrations for the English first edition.1 The showcase also marks a significant moment for Jansson's work in Britain, where her Moomins comic strip first appeared in the London Evening News starting in 1954.1
