Meanwhile, a Georgia execution scheduled for the same day has been halted. Stacey Humphreys, who was sentenced to death for killing two real estate agents—Cyndi Williams and Lori Brown—on November 3, 2003, in Powder Springs, a suburb of Atlanta, had her execution suspended.1 Humphreys withdrew more than $3,000 from the victims' bank accounts.1 A Georgia judge halted the execution by invoking a new state law that allows abuse victims to seek resentencing and reduced sentences based on the harm they experienced.1
Texas has executed five people so far this year, while Georgia has yet to carry out any executions this year.1 Florida has performed the highest number of executions nationally, accounting for more than half of the 25 executions conducted across the United States this year.1
