US Special Envoy John Cole announced in Minsk that Belarus will release 25 prisoners in exchange for the United States lifting sanctions on two companies and unfreezing assets.1 Under the agreement, the United States will remove sanctions against Lakokraska, an industrial paint manufacturer, and Bellesbumprom, a state-owned forestry company.1 The US will also unfreeze tens of millions of dollars in Belarusian assets held in American banks.1
The sanctions on Lakokraska have been in place since 2008, while those on Bellesbumprom were imposed in 2023.1 Cole had previously requested in March that Belarus release 250 prisoners, a figure significantly higher than the agreement reached.1 Human rights organization Viasna reports that more than 900 political prisoners remain incarcerated in Belarus.1 Western sanctions against Belarus intensified following 2020, when President Lukashenko cracked down on protests against his reelection.1
