According to an annual report by the international nonprofit organization Global Witness, Colombia and Brazil have become the deadliest countries for environmental defenders, with at least 124 environmental activists murdered globally in 2025.1 Colombia recorded 39 killings and Brazil 26, while Latin America accounted for 85 percent of documented murders.1 Most of these killings stem from land disputes and are carried out by gang members and organized crime groups.1
Colombia has maintained its position as the most dangerous country for environmental activists for four consecutive years, with nearly half of the victims belonging to indigenous communities.1 Brazil saw a particularly sharp increase, with the number of environmental defenders killed in 2025 doubling compared to 2024.1 In Asia, the Philippines recorded the highest toll at 12 documented murders.1 Globally, documented killings declined from 146 cases in 2024 to 128 cases in 2025.1
