U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and Trump ally Steve Bannon attended a "Pro-Human" summit to call for stricter regulation of artificial intelligence, denouncing technology oligarchs and demanding government oversight of AI development.12 Sanders stated that "the people of this country must make the decisions about AI, and not just a handful of oligarchs,"2 while Bannon declared, "We can never trust what an oligarch says because... they're disingenuous and they lie."2
Their calls for regulation contrast with positions taken by AI industry leaders. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged that concerns about AI are justified, telling an audience at Salesforce's annual conference in San Francisco that "it doesn't take as much imagination as it used to for [us] to imagine how this could go wrong. I think the world is right to be afraid of this."2 However, Altman argued the industry should be trusted to self-regulate, asserting, "We will get it right, I'm very confident in our company's and industry's ability to do this safely."2 Other tech executives have resisted government intervention. Jensen Huang stated, "We don't need new laws or regulations."2
In response to mounting pressure, OpenAI and Anthropic are collaborating with other AI laboratories to develop industry-wide safety standards agreements,2 suggesting an effort to preempt formal government regulation through voluntary industry coordination.
