A planned meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and former US President Donald Trump is expected to address artificial intelligence issues, with both countries exchanging charges over AI practices in the lead-up to the talks.1
The US National Security Agency, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and Federal Bureau of Investigation jointly accused Chinese AI companies including DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, Alibaba, MiniMax, and StepFun of large-scale distillation of American AI models.1 In response, China's state media People's Daily characterized model distillation as "a common practice of mutual learning between different models in the AI field and essentially a neutral technical means."1 Beijing warned that if the United States pursued measures damaging Chinese interests under the guise of combating distillation, "China will resolutely take countermeasures."1
The Xi-Trump meeting is scheduled for September 24 in Washington.1 The two countries are also preparing for a dialogue focused on AI safety risks planned for mid-September.1
