A new report from the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) has exposed severe geographic disparities in job prospects for young people across Britain.1 Rotherham in South Yorkshire faces the nation's most challenging youth employment market, with only 46 online job vacancies per 1,000 young people, compared to 288 vacancies per 1,000 in the Cotswolds—a sixfold difference.1 The national average stands at 109 vacancies per 1,000 young people.1
The findings underscore a broader crisis in youth employment. More than one million 16- to 24-year-olds in the UK are currently not in employment, education, or training (NEET), marking the highest figure in over a decade.1 This represents more than one-eighth of all young people in that age group.1 The regional disparity is particularly stark when examining the strongest employment markets: nine of the ten areas with the best youth job opportunities are located in southern England.1
The IPPR has called for systemic reforms to address these disparities, recommending changes to the apprenticeship system, the creation of a "kickstart for work" programme, and the introduction of a new "youth allowance" scheme.1
