A developer has successfully emulated the 3dfx Voodoo Graphics chipset using SystemVerilog on a Xilinx KV260 FPGA board, bringing the z486 XL project to life—a complete DOS PC system featuring an integrated Voodoo graphics processing unit 1. The implementation supports core Voodoo functionality including triangle rasterization, texture filtering, depth testing, and fog effects, enabling classic Glide-based software such as Tomb Raider to run on the custom-built hardware 1. The project has been released as open source 1.
The z486 XL operates at 100 MHz and achieves 78.5 million pixels per second with texturing and 72.8 million pixels per second with depth testing and blending, compared to the original Voodoo 1 specification of 43 and 37 million pixels per second respectively at 50 MHz 1. When running Tomb Raider Level 2, the system attains approximately 12 frames per second based on buffer swap measurements 1. The Voodoo implementation consumes approximately 29,500 LUTs, 28,100 flip-flops, 14 RAMB36 blocks, 8 RAMB18 blocks, and 97 DSP slices on the KV260 platform 1. Unlike the original Voodoo, which used dedicated EDO RAM, the project leverages the KV260's shared DDR memory architecture 1.
