According to a Bloomberg New Energy Finance report, US data centers are expected to consume approximately 18 billion cubic feet of natural gas daily by 2035, surpassing the combined consumption of Germany and Japan 1. This projection represents nearly double the estimate made nine months earlier 1. Data centers will become the second-largest driver of US natural gas demand growth during this period 1.
The surge will be distributed across two categories of facilities. Grid-connected data centers are projected to drive an additional 15 billion cubic feet of daily gas consumption, a figure five times greater than growth from other grid-based industries 1. Meanwhile, proprietary power plants built by major technology companies—including Meta, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, all of which have announced new natural gas generation facilities—are expected to consume an additional 2.9 to 3.4 billion cubic feet per day, equivalent to the total consumption of all US data centers today 1.
The environmental implications are significant. Burning one cubic foot of natural gas releases greenhouse gases equivalent to 60 grams of carbon dioxide when accounting for extraction, processing, and distribution 1. The additional natural gas demand from data centers alone is estimated to generate 1 million metric tons of greenhouse gases daily, representing approximately 12 percent of current US total greenhouse gas emissions 1. This expansion is also expected to exert upward pressure on natural gas prices 1.
