Astronomers using the X-ray satellite XRISM have discovered that winds ejected from supermassive black holes carry approximately 100 times more energy than scientists had previously estimated.1 The winds from the quasar H1821+643, located roughly 3.4 billion light-years from Earth, extend across a region spanning about 300,000 light-years, far exceeding the boundaries of the galaxy hosting the black hole.1 This energy output is equivalent to the force of billions of supernovae explosions.1
The finding, published in the journal Nature Astronomy, reveals that supermassive black holes exert a far more profound influence on the universe than earlier research suggested.1 Satoshi Yamada from Tohoku University stated that black holes "have a broader impact on the cosmic environment and serve as a key driving force in the flow and movement of gas throughout the universe."1 The research was conducted by teams from Tohoku University, Kanazawa University, and Tokyo Metropolitan University.1
