The death of Kurdish woman Jina Mahsa Amini in September 2022 became a turning point for Iran's women's rights movement.1 Amini, 22, was arrested by morality police in Tehran on allegations of violating hijab regulations and died three days later in a hospital.1 Her death sparked nationwide protests under the slogan "Woman, Life, Freedom," which activists described as representing the largest social and cultural transformation Iran had witnessed in decades.1
Although the Iranian government ultimately suppressed the 2022 demonstrations, the movement awakened widespread resistance among women.1 Many young women have since openly defied state-mandated dress codes, continuing their resistance even as the regime remains committed to enforcing stricter hijab legislation.1 In September 2026, Iran's parliament urged Speaker Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf to submit a proposed hijab law to the president for signature.1
The current struggle builds on a longer history of feminist activism in Iran.1 In 2006, women's rights activists including Mansoureh Shojaei launched the "Million Signatures" campaign, which sought to collect one million signatures to change discriminatory laws against women.1 Prominent figures in the movement, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi and Nagis Mohammadi, a 2023 Nobel Peace Prize recipient, have faced state repression for their activism.1
