Japan's Air Self-Defense Force has determined that an American-made Global Hawk unmanned reconnaissance aircraft has crashed in waters off Tottori Prefecture.1 The aircraft departed from Misawa Air Base at approximately 10:20 a.m. on September 15 and lost communication contact around 1:00 p.m. the same day in the coastal waters near Tottori.1 Japan's Coast Guard subsequently discovered suspected aircraft wreckage in the area, leading the Air Self-Defense Force to conclude that the drone had crashed.1
The Global Hawk measures approximately 15 meters in length with a wingspan of about 40 meters and a height of roughly 5 meters.1 The aircraft had been airborne for approximately 36 hours before losing contact.1 Japan currently operates three Global Hawk unmanned surveillance aircraft, each acquired at a cost of approximately 170 billion yen.1
