A survey by NHS Confederation has revealed widespread racial discrimination affecting managers from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds across the English National Health Service. Nearly four in five of the 950 BAME managers surveyed reported experiencing racism, exclusion and barriers to career progression 1. One in five of those polled indicated plans to leave the NHS within the next three years 1.
Despite some progress in board representation—with BAME members increasing from 7.1 percent in 2016 to 17.3 percent by 2025 1—systemic and structural racism remains deeply entrenched within the institution. NHS Confederation chair Victor Adebowale stated that "the NHS is institutionally racist" 1. Prof Habib Naqvi, chief executive of the NHS Race and Health Observatory, characterized the findings as "alarming but unsurprising" 1.
An NHS England spokesperson emphasized that new workforce standards now require trusts to take continuous action against racism and to measure progress through the NHS regulatory framework 1.
